Mabel Viet, 90, of Grundy Center, Iowa, passed away on Thursday, August 31st at the Grundy County Memorial Hospital in Grundy Center while under the care of Cedar Valley Hospice. Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Monday, September 4, 2017 at the Engelkes-Abels Funeral Home in Grundy Center. The funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, September 5, 2017 at the Pleasant Valley Reformed Church in rural Holland (Fern). Burial will follow the funeral service at the Pleasant Valley Reformed Church Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the family.

Mabel was born on December 13, 1926 in Sibley, Iowa to her parents Paul & Martha (Harms) Frieling. When Mabel was 6 years old she and her family moved to Holland and then to Parkersburg where she graduated the 8th grade. She then worked the family farm alongside her father until she was united in marriage to her husband George Viet on March 7, 1945 at the Pleasant Valley Reformed Church parsonage. Together they welcomed their daughter Diane into their family on December 19, 1948. George and Mabel worked the family farm in Beaver Township for 47 years; they then retired to Grundy Center in 1993.

Mabel was a long-time member of the Pleasant Valley Reformed Church, where she served the church as a member of the Ladies Guild, taught Bible school and was a youth group leader alongside her husband George. She was fond of sewing and crocheting. She enjoyed and was a very talented floral arranger. Mabel was an awesome baker, she was especially known for her cinnamon rolls and pies. George and Mabel enjoyed camping in Clear Lake with their grandchildren. While in Clear Lake they enjoyed visiting the local garage sales to find “treasures.” They also enjoyed visiting flea markets and playing cards with family and friends. George and Mabel loved to travel together, and were proud to say they visited all 50 States. Her true joy in life came from spending time with her family especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She is survived by her husband of 72 years, George of Grundy Center; daughter Diane (David) Kremer of Wellsburg; grandchildren Craig Wildeboer of Grundy Center, Chad (Kathleen) Wildeboer of North Port, FL and Amy (Travis) Knudsvig of Waterloo; great-grandchildren Dalton Lee Wildeboer, Austin & Cole Wildeboer and Emersyn and Asher Knudsvig. Mabel was preceded in death by her parents; brothers Herman and Clarence Frieling and sister Mary Henze; sisters-in-law Dena & Frances Frieling and brother-in-law William Henze, and a son in infancy.
