Obituary Of John Saathoff
Was Oldest Living Member of Colfax Presbyterian Church
John Saathoff was born at Pogum, Ost Friesland, Germany, November 1st, 1841. He was united in marriage April 10th, 1866 with Hilke Groote and on their wedding trip, they landed at Adelina, Illinois. For two years they lived on a farm at Shannon, Illinois, and early in the spring of 1869 they moved on one of the George Wells' farms. In 1870 they moved to Colfax township where they resided until six years ago when his health failed and they made their home in Grundy Center.
There were born to them two children, one boy who died at birth and the only bereaved daughter, Mrs. E. H. Dirks. Mr. Saathoff being one of the earliest settlers, was also one of the first members of the Drake church in Colfax township and at the time of his death was the last member of the first membership laid to rest.
He was a faithful member and was always willing to do his part. He was trustee for many years and treasurer of said church until his health failed.
He leaves to mourn his death, his wife, and daughter, Mrs. E. H. Dirks, and her family, three grandchildren, J. S. Dirks, Mrs. Andrew Franken, and C. H. Dirks, and their families, and one great-grandchild.
He also leaves three sisters and many other relatives living in Oklahoma and South Dakota who could not attend the funeral on account of the prevailing epidemic.
Short services were held at the home by Rev. Sinning and the sermon was preached by Rev. J. E. Drake at the church where he was laid to rest on the family lot.
