Grant Twp. Pioneer Is Called

John D. Murphy a Resident of Grundy County for 56 Years

John D. Murphy, aged 85, died at his home south of town last Friday afternoon. He had been an active man up until this spring. He had regularly driven to town with his horse and buggy until his health began to fail recently. Mr. Murphy was a man greatly respected here. He had lived in this vicinity since 1862. He was one of the early settlers of Chicago and could tell many interesting stories of that place when it was only a burg. Mrs. Murphy who survives him is past 92.

John D. Murphy was born in Ireland in 1833. At the age of thirteen he came with his parents to the United States and settled in Chicago.

September 17, 1854, he was married to Kathryn Prindleville. They lived in Wisconsin a few years and came to Cedar Falls in 1862. In 1869 they moved to the farm south of town where they have since resided.

Ten children were born to this union; Mrs. James P. Murphy, Dike; C. J. H. Murphy, Cedar Falls, (deceased); Mrs. William F. Murphy, Cedar Falls; Wm. C. Murphy, Dike, (deceased); Mrs. Margaret O'Connor, Dike; Mrs. John McCoy, Cedar Falls; John F. Murphy, Dike; Mrs. Stephen Bonn, Cedar Falls; Mrs. J. H. Smith, Waterloo; Mrs. G. C. Grady, New Hartford. Mr. Murphy had forty-seven grandchildren, all living but three.

He had been in good health until this spring. Heart trouble caused death on July 10[sic], 1918.

Funeral services were held at St. Mary's Catholic church Sunday the 21st, Rev. T. J. Norris, of Grundy Center, officiating. Six grandsons acted as pall bearers.--Dike New Era.
