Phebe Stevens, 90, Buried Saturday At St. Mary's Cemetery

Mrs. Phebe E. Stevens, 90, former Dike and area school teacher was buried at the St. Mary's Cemetery southeast of Dike last Saturday, Feb. 28, 1976. Mrs. Stevens passed away at her home in New Hartford on Tuesday, Feb. 24th.

Services for Mrs. Stevens were held Saturday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in New Hartford, a scripture service was held Friday evening at the Kaiser-Corson Funeral Chapel, New Hartford who were in charge of the arrangements.

Phebe VanGelder was born Nov. 4, 1885 near New Hartford the daughter of Robert and Electra Jane VanGelder. She was a graduate of the New Hartford class of 1903 (the second class to complete high school requirements). She was then a teacher in the Dike school system for 2 or 3 years and then in rural Dike schools to make seven years of school teaching.

She was married in 1910 to Thomas D. Stevens. They farmed in Howard county until he was killed in a farm accident in 1931. He was buried at the St. Mary's Cemetery on March 12, 1931. Mrs. Stevens moved to New Hartford and was an Avon saleslady for over 25 years, retiring in 1960.

Survivors include a daughter, Jeanette Stevens Schmidt of New Hartford and two sons, Philip J. and Robert C., both of New Hartford and two grandsons, Robert W. Schmidt of Lancaster, Penn., and Thomas D. Schmidt of Floral Park, New York, who were both here for the memorial services.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and one sister, Mrs. Harry (Juhl) Moore.
