John VanDeest Dies At Minnesota

John VanDeest, who farmed in Grundy county several years, died last Wednesday at his home near Albert Lea, Minn., following a long illness from tuberculosis. He was 81 years old.

Funeral services were held at Albert Lea Saturday forenoon, after which the body was brought to the Ferree Funeral Home in Grundy Center where a short service was held Saturday afternoon at 3 o'clock. The service was conducted by Rev. W. Eekhoff, pastor of the Colfax Presbyterian church. Burial was in the Colfax church cemetery.

Pallbearers were Marcus A. Meyer, Henry J. Meester, Eugene H. Meester, John B. VanDeest, Ollie DeBerg and Fritz Hook.

A native of Shannon, Ill., he was born Jan. 9, 1881, to Adolph and Gepka VanDeest. When he was three years old his parents moved to Grundy Center, where he lived 48 years. He also lived at Henning, Minn., before moving to Albert Lea. He attended rural school in Iowa and was a member of First Methodist church in Albert Lea.

Mr. VanDeest and Elizabeth Veenker were married Nov. 20, 1907, at Grundy Center. She survives him.

Surviving are the wife, a son Alfred, Albert Lea, and a daughter, Mrs. Joe Krog from Des Moines. Other surviving members of his family are a brother, Ben VanDeest, and a sister, Mrs. A. M. Meyer, both from Grundy Center; six grandchildren.
