Services Held For Jacob Westerman

Jacob Westerman of Holland passed away at 12:28 p.m. Friday, January 17, at the Long Term Care Unit of the Grundy County Memorial Hospital in Grundy Center.

Funeral services were held at the Pleasant Valley Reformed Church, rural Holland, on Monday, January 20, at 1:30 p.m. Pastor Joel Brummel officiated.

Wayne Arends sang "God Leads Us Along" and "Take Thou My Hand, O Father." The congregation sang "What A Friend We Have In Jesus." The accompanist was Mrs. Clarence Walterman, who also played selected numbers for the prelude and postlude.

The casket bearers were Dennis Westerman, Rusty Garrett, James Everts, Stan Everts, Robert Heinrich and Randy Eckhoff.

The ushers were Charles Freese, R. M. VanHauen, and Jake Schoneman. Mrs. Herbert Johnson and Mrs. Lillian Kruger were in charge of the floral arrangements.

Interment was in the Pleasant Valley Cemetery.

Relatives and friends were invited to return to the church following the committal services for a period of Christian fellowship and refreshments.

Mr. Westerman was born on October 12, 1892, in Simonswalde, Ostfriesland, Germany, the son of Jasper and Margaret Voogd Westerman. He attained the age of 93 years, three months and five days.

He grew up in Germany and on July 25, 1920, he was united in marriage to Ettje VanWesten in Ostfriesland, Germany. They came to America in October of 1924, and lived near Aplington in Grundy county for seven years where he worked as a farm laborer.

He then farmed in Grundy county and in 1954, they moved and made their home in Holland. In April of 1976 his wife Ettje became a resident of the Long Term Care Unit and in February of 1977, he became a resident of the Long Term Care Unit also.

He was a long time member of the Pleasant Valley Reformed Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife on May 20, 1980; one son; two grandchildren; three brothers; and three sisters.

He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Alfred (Grace) Meester of Wellsburg and Mrs. Fred R. (Margaret) Everts of New Hartford; one son, Jasper (Jack) Westerman of Holland; one sister, Mrs. Harmke Saathoff of Stout; seven grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

A memorial fund has been established.

The Engelkes-Abels Funeral Home of Grundy Center was in charge of the funeral arrangements.
