Herbert Johnson, age 83, of Parkersburg, died Friday, December 10, 2010, at the Grundy County Memorial Hospital in Grundy Center, from natural causes. He was born January 12, 1927, the son of George and Flossie (Behrends) Johnson in Butler County, Iowa. Herbert attended rural country school and worked on the family farm near Butler Center for many years with his father.

On August 24, 1950, he was united in marriage to Viola Harriet Meester at the Pleasant Valley Reformed Church in rural Holland, Iowa. To this union four children were born. The couple made their home on the Johnson Family Farm for a year and a half before moving to their farm near Buck Grove. Herbert raised crops, livestock, hogs, chickens, and milked during his years as a farmer. He retired in 1989 and the couple moved to Parkersburg, Iowa.

Herbert was a member of the Pleasant Valley Reformed Church. In his free time he enjoyed hunting with his sons and teaching his grandchildren to fish. He loved having fish fry’s for all the family to get together and enjoy. Herbert will always be remembered for his contagious smile and was always happy to see you.

Herbert died Friday, December 10, 2010, at the Grundy County Memorial Hospital in Grundy Center, Iowa, from natural causes. He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Katie Eilders; three brothers, Everett, John and George Johnson.

Herbert is survived by his wife of 60 years, Viola; four children, LuRae Johnson of Wellsburg, Iowa, LuDean Johnson of Aplington, Iowa, Karen (Wayne) Meister of Eldora, Iowa, and Vernon (Lynda) Johnson of Wellsburg, Iowa; 12 grandchildren, Thadeus (Paula) Johnson, Mariah Johnson, Nathaniel (Bridget Klein) Johnson, Gabriel, and Isaiah Johnson, Heath (Heidi) Mitchell, Trent and Tyson Mitchell, Codie, Hollie, Alyce, and Grant Johnson; three great-grandchildren, Allen and Ivan Johnson, Levi Johnson; two step-grandchildren, Tina (Shane) Clouser and Albert Meister; seven step-great-grandchildren, Bridgette, Gavin, and Halle Clouser, Gabby, Peyton, Sam, and Grant Meister; six brothers, Harry (Hannah) Johnson of Allison, Iowa, Stauffer (Bendena) Johnson of Parkersburg, Iowa, Fred (Christina) Johnson of Clarksville, Iowa, Lawrence (Doris) Johnson, of Allison, Iowa, Alfred (Adeline) Johnson of Allison, Iowa, and Vern Johnson of Hampton, Iowa; two sisters, Mildred Johnson of Parkersburg, Iowa and Frances Johnson of Clarksville, Iowa.

Funeral Services will be 1:30 p.m., Wednesday, December 15, 2010, at the Pleasant Valley Reformed Church with burial in Pleasant Valley Cemetery, both in rural Holland.

Visitation will be from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m., Tuesday at the Redman-Schwartz Funeral Home in Parkersburg, and continue for one hour prior to services at the church.
