Alexander J. Springer was born in Scholaire county, N.Y., September 8, 1823. He was the son of Charles and Hulda Springer. His death occurred at Whitten, Iowa, July 14, 1898. He was 74 years, 11 months, 5 days of age.

July 4, 1847, he was married to Cynthia E. Weed. They lived together for the unusually long period of 51 years. God blessed this union with three children, two of them being born in New York; Alice, who died in infancy, and James R., who now lives in Oregon; and one, Mrs. Nettie E. Myers, was born in Iowa, whither they had moved from New York in 1852 to Jackson county. From Jackson county they removed to Grundy county in 1861, where they lived for 33 years on the farm. Removed to Whitten in 1894, where he lived until the time of his death.

As a husband and father he was kind and helpful to his family; as a citizen, above reproach and interested and foremost in every movement that tended to advance the town in which he lived; as a neighbor, willing to lend a helping hand to assist the needy and deserving.

While not being a member of the church, he attended all its services, and was present at church on the day of the accident that caused his death. He was a liberal contributor to the support of the gospel and assisted in every work of the church.

The funeral services occurred Friday afternoon at the Christian church, conducted by the pastor, Eugene Curless. Mr. Springer was laid to rest in the Benson cemetery southeast of Whitten.
