Services Held For Mary Konken

Mary Konken died at 5 p.m. Thursday, March 29, 1984, at Beverly Manor Convalescent Center in Grundy Center after reaching the age of 92 years, six months, and 26 days. She suffered a stroke in 1975 and had been a resident of Beverly Manor since November 1, 1975.

Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, March 31, in the Reformed Church of Stout with Pastor Don Ringnalda officiating. Mrs. Elaine Schnell was the organist, and Randy and Jill Konken sang "In The Garden" and "How Great Thou Art".

The casketbearers were Charles Juel, Bernard Beninga, Harry Hemmen, Rodney Kendrick, Paul Klingenborg, and Harvey Eiklenborg. Interment followed in the Stout Cemetery.

Mary was born the daughter of John and Antje Oltmanns Hempen on September 3, 1891, in Grundy County, near Dike. She attended Beaver #7, Grundy County rural school.

On March 4, 1918, Mary was united in marriage to Henry Konken in the parsonage of the Reformed Church in Stout. They made their home and engaged in farming in Grundy and Butler counties until retiring and moving to Stout on March 1, 1952. Henry died on March 17, 1977.

Mrs. Konken was a member of the Reformed Church in Stout and a member of the Ladies Guild.

She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; four sisters and two brothers.

Mary is survived by her son, John Konken of Stout; her daughter, Harriet (Mrs. Harold) Houlihan of Marshalltown; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Schwartz-Engelkes Funeral Home in Parkersburg was in charge of the funeral arrangements.
