Jake DeVries Fatally Hurt In Farm Mishap
Funeral services for Jake J. DeVries were held on Tuesday, March 4, at 1:30 p.m. at the West Friesland Presbyterian Church at rural Ackley. Officiating were Rev. Charles Westendorf and Rev. Tim Diehl.
A ladies quartet, Mrs. Eugene Harken, Mrs. Edward Ubben, Mrs. Genevieve Neymeyer and Mrs. Dan Schwickerath sang two selections accompanied by Mrs. Lester Neymeyer. A vocal duet was given by Rev. Charles and LaVonne Westendorf. Mrs. Eugene Harken was organist.
Ushers were Ernest Boekhoff, Neil Knoll, and John Schipper.
Casket bearers were Douglas Neymeyer, LeRoy Huesman, Eldon Muller, Eugene Harken, Edward Ubben, and Delbert B. Lindaman.
The interment service was held in the West Friesland Presbyterian Church Cemetery.
The Doyen Funeral Home was in charge of funeral arrangements.
Mr. DeVries passed away around 1:00 Saturday afternoon, March 1, at the Covenant Medical Center-Schoitz due to injuries received in an accident at his farm on Friday morning. He reached the age of 78 years and 26 days.
He was born on February 5, 1908, on a farm in Butler county, near Kesley the son of Ben and Tillie (Krull) DeVries and received his education in the rural school in the area.
On December 22, 1925, he was married to Jennie VanLoh at Kesley. Following their marriage they lived on a farm southwest of Ackley, then north of Aplington, and three years in Dumont. They moved to their present farm place in 1938 where they have since resided, there Jake farmed and trucked hogs and cattle.
Jake was a long-time member of the West Friesland Presbyterian Church of rural Ackley having joined by transfer of membership. He had served as a Trustee of the Church Session and as an Usher.
He has been a German township trustee for many years.
Preceding him in death were: his parents, a son, Arnold, who passed away July 9, 1982; and a brother, Carl DeVries.
Those left to mourn his passing are: his wife, Jennie; two daughters and two sons, (Dorothy), Mrs. Christie Stubbe of Aplington; (Louella), Mrs. Donald Condie of Denver, CO; Louis DeVries of Linn Creek, MO; Richard DeVries of Wiscasset, ME; a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Laura DeVries of Ackley; 15 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren; two sisters and two brothers, Mrs. Alice Newville of Waterloo; Mrs. Florene O'Brien of Mabank, TX; John DeVries of Sheffield; Harm DeVries of Fredericksburg and many other relatives and friends.
