J. J. Mennenga Died Saturday; Burial Tuesday

John J. Mennenga, a long time resident of this community, died at his home in Wellsburg at one o'clock Saturday morning. He suffered a stroke of paralysis about a year ago but he seemed to have recovered from that. A few weeks ago he took sick with the flu. That affected his heart and helped to bring on the end. He was 75 years old.

Funeral services were held at the home at one o'clock Tuesday and later at the First Christian Reformed church. Burial was in the cemetery adjoining the church. Rev. Louis Voskuil officiated at the services.

Was a Native of Illinois
Mr. Mennenga was born at Oregon, Ill., on May 22, 1868. He was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Jans Mennenga. The family moved to Grundy county when John was still a small boy and went to farming in Shiloh township. The entire family all remained here and the father and mother, who were among the early residents of this locality, are buried in the cemetery of the First Christian Reformed church.

35 years ago John Mennenga and Frederika Riekena were married. They began housekeeping on a Shiloh township farm and resided there until they moved to Wellsburg in December 1942.

Surviving are the wife and one son, Jans, who is employed on the Jake Stahl farm in Colfax township. Other surviving relatives are three sisters. They are Mrs. John Rah, Mrs. Hilko Bleeker and Mrs. Hemmo Luppen. There is one surviving brother, Obbo, living west of town.

Nephews of the deceased were pallbearers. They were Evert Bleeker, Fred Luppen, Edw. Mennenga, Ben P. Riekena, Henry E. Nederhoff and Jake G. Geerdes.
