Funeral Services For John H. Ruter
John H. Ruter passed away on his farm Friday morning, October 23, 1953 at 8:30 a.m., having attained to the age of 76 years, 6 months and 6 days. Though he had a heart condition which precipitated an attack about three years ago, he was in good health up to the moment of death. A fatal heart attack abruptly ended his life, mercifully sparing him any suffering.
He was born the son of Hemme and Gepke Ruter on April 17, 1877 on a farm one-half mile south of the First Christian Reformed Church. After a time he moved to a farm 3 miles south of the church. It was here that he farmed throughout his entire life, except for the last two years which he spent in retirement at his home in Wellsburg. Mr. Ruter was born of Christian parents who presented him for infant baptism in this church. In 1910 he made confession of faith and was a faithful member in full communion of this same church as long as he lived on the earth.
On March 17, 1909 he was united in marriage to Anna Eekhoff by the Rev. G. L. Hoefker. The Lord gave them two daughters and blessed them with 44 years of married life.
Surviving him are his beloved wife and the two daughters, Grace (Mrs. George Blythe) and Adele (Mrs. Wilbur Knock); three sisters, Helen and Flora (Mrs. Boyd Eekhoff) of Wellsburg, Iowa, and Gepke (Mrs. Gus Sanders) of West Bend, Iowa. Eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild also survive him. Preceding him in death were three brothers, Ben, Eike and Peter; three sisters, Hattie (Mrs. Peter H. Eckhoff), Gertie (Mrs. Lambert Bunger), and Inke (Mrs. Boyo Frieburg); and one great-grandchild.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, October 27, 1953 at 1 p.m. in the home and later in the First Christian Reformed Church of Wellsburg. The Rev. Alfred Hannink officiated at the service. Burial was in the cemetery adjoining the church. Casketbearers were Herman P. Ruter, Harry Eekhoff, Aldrich L. Bunger, Eike E. Ruter, Peter B. Eckhoff, and Edwin Bakker.
