Funeral Held For Mrs. Clara Geerdes
Funeral services for Mrs. Clara Geerdes were held on Wednesday, April 29 at 1:30 p.m. at the First Christian Reformed Church.
Rev. Leslie Kuiper was officiating pastor.
The Messengers quartet, Richard Schafer, Lary Riebkes, Melvin Haupt and Arnold Eiten, sang two selections accompanied by Mrs. LuRay Meyer. Miss Elizabeth Eckhoff was organist. Flower attendants were Mrs. Jessie Eiten and Mrs. Janet Williams.
Pallbearers were Merle Bakker, Gordon Heetland, Robert Geerdes, Gregory Geerdes, Gordon Geerdes and Don Geerdes.
Interment was held in the First Christian Reformed Church cemetery.
Mrs. Geerdes passed away Sunday morning, April 26, at the Presbyterian Home in Ackley due to complications of advanced age, and reached the age of 79 years, 7 months and 16 days. She had been a resident of the Home since December of 1980.
She was born on a farm in Shiloh township, west of Wellsburg, on September 10, 1901, the daughter of John and Gertie (Ruter) Geerdes and attended the rural school in the area.
On March 2, 1932, she was united in marriage to Jake G. Geerdes at the First Christian Reformed Church parsonage by the Rev. H. C. Bode. Following their marriage they made their home on a farm west of Wellsburg. Mr. Geerdes passed away January 28, 1967.
She moved from the farm to Wellsburg in 1967 to make her home. On June 18, 1979 she entered the Long Term Care Unit at the Grundy County Memorial Hospital in Grundy Center and lived there until the time she went to the Home in Ackley.
Mrs. Geerdes was a long-time member of the First Christian Reformed Church of Wellsburg, having joined by confession on May 1, 1949.
Preceding her in death were her parents, her husband, four brothers, one in infancy, Ben J. Geerdes, George J. Geerdes, and Claus Geerdes; also one sister, Mrs. John (Gertie) Heikens.
Survivors include three sisters and one brother: Mrs. Florence Heetland of Ackley; Miss Ordie Geerdes of Wellsburg; Mrs. Grace Bakker, Wellsburg; Gratus J. Geerdes of Wellsburg and several nieces and nephews.
Doyen Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
