Death Of Mrs. Lyman Cole
Obituary read at the Funeral by her Pastor Rev. Kennedy
Mrs. Emily Fanny Cummings was born Oct. 29, 1827, at Waterford, Vt. Two years later her parents and family removed to Crown Point, N.Y., and later to Chautauqua county in the same state.
In 1838 the family emigrated to Carroll county, Illinois, where the deceased grew to womanhood. At Mt. Carroll Miss Cummings was united in holy matrimony to Mr. Lyman Cole, July 2, 1846, and Illinois remained their home for the first ten years of married life.
In 1856 they emigrated to Grundy County, Iowa, and began farming two miles east of Grundy Center. Here they lived as pioneers having no market or post office nearer than Waterloo and no mansion other than a log cabin and few neighbors except the native Indians, and few diversions except the perils and trials of pioneer life. Still it was with reluctance that in 1883 Mrs. Cole exchanged farm life for town residence and moved from her home on the farm to the one from which she is soon to be carried to her long resting place in the city of the dead.
Sister Cole became the mother of five children, Byron B., Luella M., Herbert A., Dorlan A. and Delia M. With the latter Mrs. Cole had been visiting since last fall hoping the warmer climate would prove more healthful for her. But the reaper whose name is Death did not long delay a visit to the same place.
At her daughter's home in Wellington, Kans., Sister Cole passed away from earth Jan. 27, 1904, aged 76 years, 2 months and 29 days.
In 1863 Mrs. Cole joined the Methodist Episcopal church and maintained her relation to that church for a little more than forty years.
Beneath the banner of the crucified,
She bravely fought and nobly died;
And more than conqueror now,
All that to victory belong--
The wreath, the palm, the song,
Fill her triumphant soul,
Bind her immortal brow.--The Grundy Republican (Grundy Center, Iowa), 4 February 1904, pg 1
