John McClung was born in Vanvert county, Ohio, Jan. 22, 1840, and died at Independence, Iowa, Oct. 22, 1902, aged 62 years and 9 months.
Deceased moved to Eldora, Iowa, in 1865. In 1868 he came to Grundy Center living in this city three years and then moved to the country. In 1890 he took up his residence on the farm which was his home until his death.
On April 1, 1873, Mr. McClung was married to Elizabeth Bowman. Having no children of their own, they took into their home when he was but two weeks old their nephew, Archie Kern, who has been to them a son.
Mr. McClung united with the United Brethren church in Ohio when seventeen years of age and became a member of the Methodist Episcopal church of Grundy Center in 1868. He occupied an official position in the church for many years.
Four years ago he was thrown from a horse resulting in severe injury which affected his mind necessitating his removal to the hospital at Independence where he died. He leaves to mourn his death his beloved wife, a sister, Mrs. Annie Cone of Traer, a brother, George of Nampa, Idaho, and his nephew and foster son, Archie Kern.
He was a prohibitionist, earnest, zealous and consistent. He commanded the respect of all who knew him, ever looking at the bright side and speaking a kind word whenever possible and extending a helping hand to those in distress. He has not lived in vain.
Funeral services were held at his late residence Saturday, Oct. 25, at 2:30 p.m. conducted by Rev. Nathaniel Pye, pastor of the M.E. church of Grundy Center.
