Mary A. Watkins Called in Death Wednesday at the Ripe Old Age of 74 years.

Obituary of Mary A. Watkins

Mary Adeline Ball was the daughter of Rodolphus and Roxanna Ball and was born at Montague, Mass., on the 18th day of June 1842. Her earthly life closed on the 28th day of April, 1920 at the ripe age of seventy four years, ten months and ten days. When 23 years of age, she united her life in marriage with William E. Watkins of Spring Prairie, Wis., and there the new home was established for a year. Coming to Grundy Center in the spring of 1869, the family alter was established and labor was renewed on a farm near there. With the exception of four years spent in Wright county, the family home was near or in Grundy Center, the remainder of her life.

Mrs. Watkins was the mother of nine children, eight of whom were with her when she fell asleep. Thru the years of home building in a new country, she proved herself a loving and able help-mate to her husband and a true mother to her flock. Her quiet, cheerful nature will be long remembered by all who knew her well and her children have reason to rise up and call her blessed. She was a sincere Christian woman, uniting November 21, 1897 in the fellowship of the Presbyterian church in Grundy Center. On the 28th of September, 1918, she was bereaved of her husband, and God mercifully spared her to us for a brief time. A brother, Julius A. Ball of Montague, Mass., survives her, as do her eight sons and daughters, which are the following: Frank E. Watkins, Ida L. Watkins, Eda M. Cone, Howard R. Watkins, Herbert N. Watkins, Harriett R. Schaffer, Harold C. Watkins and Harry A. Watkins. The first born child Fred E. Watkins, died when a child. There are seventeen grandchildren who will miss a grandmother's gentle affection.

When the last hours came, she expressed her mind as ready and willing to go to the heavenly home and thither her sweet spirit departed on Wednesday noon, the 28th of April. The funeral services were conducted by the pastor Rev. Earl W. Benbow at the family home in Grundy Center and the interment was in the Clark cemetery, on Friday April 30th.
