Born In Grundy 76 Years Ago; Died From Stroke
Mrs. Ray Gifford (better known here as Mrs. Samuel Clark) died at the home of her son Fred in Grundy Center at 4:30 Friday afternoon. She was born in Grundy county 76 years ago and with the exception of the past few years she made her home in Grundy county continually.
In late years she had been residing at Garner, Iowa. There she suffered a stroke a week ago Sunday from which she was unable to recover. Three days after she was stricken she was brought to the home of her son Fred in Grundy Center. The end came two days later.
Funeral services were held in the Catholic church in Grundy Center Monday morning. The services were conducted by the local pastor, Rev. Father Leo Entringer. Burial was by the side of her first husband, Samuel Clark, in the Grundy Center cemetery.
Mrs. Gifford's maiden name was Lena Meyers. She was a daughter of Charles Meyers, one of Grundy county's pioneers. The family lived on a farm in southwest Palermo township. Following her marriage to Samuel Clark, the couple began housekeeping on their farm five miles southwest of Grundy Center. Mr. Clark died there in February, 1920. Mrs. Clark was married a second time seven years ago to Ray Gifford.
Surviving are the second husband and two sons, Fred of Grundy Center and Roy of Austin, Minn. There are five grandchildren.
