Funeral For Ezra Long Friday Afternoon

Ezra Long long time resident of Grundy and Hardin counties passed away at his home on Wednesday. He had been in failing health for some time. He would have been 78 years old May 28. A son of George and Charity Long, he was born on a farm in Grundy county. He was the last survivor of a family of eleven children. A brother Fred Long, died on April 17.

Mr. Long and his wife, the former Katherine Crombie of Beaman, celebrated their 58th wedding anniversary on April 8. They spent all their married life in the Whitten community with the exception of one year in South Dakota and another in Minnesota. They operated the first telephone exchange in Whitten. When rural lines were erected, they had a cafe in connection with the exchange.

Survivors are the widow and seven children: Rolla, at home; Mrs. Mildred Weaver, Whitten; Mrs. Vera Baker, Conrad; Mrs. Marie Gould, Mrs. Flossie Bachman and Mrs. Vivian Mitchell of Marshalltown and Charity Long of Union; 13 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. A son Clarence preceded him in death.

Services were held on Friday afternoon at the Christian church in Whitten in charge of a former pastor, Rev. Wall of Woodbine. Burial was made in the Benson cemetery. Pall bearers were Floyd Lyon, Lloyd Long, Roy Eggleston, Joe Mitchell, Howard Fry and Ray Long. The flowers were in charge of Mrs. Bessie Hauser, Mrs. Bernice Long, Mrs. Blanche Schryver and Mrs. Faye Haskin. Gerald Stambrough was soloist.
