Obituary of Thomas Hardie
Thomas Hardie died at his home in Grundy Center, Saturday morning, October 4th, at 7 o'clock. The cause of his death was heart failure brought on by an attack of pleurisy and by over exertion while chopping wood Saturday morning.
Thomas Hardie was born in 1846 aboard ship enroute from Scotland to America. His parents settled in Toronto, Ontario, shortly after, moving to the village of Brantford, Ontario, and finally moving to Detroit, Michigan where he remained until the age of 20, he broke home ties and migrated to Iowa, taking up his residence in Iowa City. Here he was married in 1860 to Ida Heller. They afterwards resided in Avoca, Iowa. Twelve years ago he and his family came to Grundy Center, which place has since been his home. A family of seven children, besides a wife, survive him, all of whom reside in this vicinity. He also leaves a sister, Mrs. Mary Smith of East Saginaw, Michigan. Funeral services were held from the M.E. church, Monday, October 6th, at 2 o'clock p.m., interment occurring at Rose Hill cemetery. Thomas Hardie had many friends and few if any enemies, always kind and considerate he was loved by those who knew him best. His family have the sympathy of the community.
