Charles Nelson Elmer was born at Cleremont, New Hampshire, May 20, 1824, removing with his parents in 1836 to Centerville, Indiana. Upon reaching manhood's estate he engaged in the mercantile business which he continued to follow until advancing years prompted his retirement from active life. He removed to Richmond, Indiana, in 1872 and to Grundy Center, Iowa, in 1878. He was united in marriage to Martha J. Fisher Oct. 22, 1847. To this union three children were born, Mrs. A. L. Coffin of Ames, Chas. Willard Elmer of Richmond, Indiana, and Mrs. A. B. Harvey of Des Moines, all of whom survive. Mother Elmer passed away Feb. 14, 1884, since which time Father Elmer has made his home with his daughter, Mrs. Coffin, accompanying the family in their removal to Des Moines in 1888, and in 1895 to Ames, Iowa, where he passed away Sept. 24, 1901, aged 77 years, 4 months and 4 days.

The remains were brought to Grundy Center Friday and laid to rest in the Clark cemetery. The following named relatives were present at the time of interment: Mr. and Mrs. A. L. Coffin, Elmer and Martha Coffin of Ames; Mr. and Mrs. A. B. Harvey, Des Moines, Mr. C. W. Elmer and daughter, June, of Richmond, Indiana, Mr. and Mrs. George Coffin, Ankeny, Iowa.
