Henry Christ Gerloff , age 86, of New Hartford, Iowa, was born the son of Lewis and Marie Flater Gerloff on April 18, 1918 near Holland in Colfax Township, Grundy County, Iowa. He attended Colfax #1 Country School through the 8th grade.
Henry was united in marriage with Arvilla Venenga on December 10, 1941. The couple made their home on the farm near New Hartford. He joined the U.S. Army in 1942 and served in the Army Air Force Military Police until 1945. Henry worked at the Dike Farm Coop for two years, Colpay Overhead Doors in Waterloo for 20 years, Midwest Turkey Hatchery, Dike, for 13 years and farmed most of his life. He was a member of Bethel Lutheran Church in Parkersburg. He belonged to the New Hartford American Legion Post #660.
Henry died Sunday, May 23, 2004, at Sartori Memorial Hospital in Cedar Falls, Iowa, of natural causes.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, George Gerloff and three sisters, Annie Hempen, Louise Fritzel and Millie Abbas.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Arville Gerloff; three sons, LeeRoy (Mary) Gerloff; Henry Lee (Janice) Gerloff and Dennis (Bonnie) Gerloff; one daughter Kay (Don) Harting; 12 grandchildren, Greg (Wendy) Gerloff, Perry (Denise) Gerloff; Brian (Leigh Anne) Gerloff; Brent (Lisa) Gerloff; Suzanne (Kirk) Neuroth; April Gerloff; Guy Gerloff, Tessa Gerloff, Sam Gerloff; Travis Harting, Tony Harting and Taylor Harting; and ten great-grandchildren, Shawn and Austin Gerloff, Blake and Erin Gerloff; Josh and Alayna Gerloff; Scott Gerloff; Connor and Malea Neuroth; Jaxon Gerloff and three step-grandchildren, Heath, Nicole and Matt Wilken.
Funeral Services were held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, May 26, Bethel Lutheran Church, Parkersburg, Iowa, with Rev. Paul Schaedig officiating. Scripture reader was Suzanne Neuroth. Organist was Michelle Mahadevan. Vocalist Bonnie Gerloff sang “In The Garden.” A duet of April Gerloff and Tessa Gerloff sang “God Be With You Until We Meet Again.” Congregational hymns were “How Great Thou Art” and “Old Rugged Cross. Casketbearers were Greg Gerloff, Travis Harting, Harlan Hempen, Brian Gerloff, Guy Gerloff and Gene Venenga. Honorary Caskebearers were Perry Gerloff, Tony Harting, Brent Gerloff, Sam Gerloff and Taylor Harting. Burial was in Oak Hill Cemetery, Parkersburg, with full military rites by New Hartford American Legion Post #660. Redman-Schwartz Funeral Home, Parkersburg, was in charge of arrangements.
