Tillie Johnson, age 86, of Aplington, Iowa, was born the daughter of Ben and Anna (DeVries) Boelman on May 25, 1917, rural Grundy County, Iowa. She received her education from a Grundy County country school.

On January 18, 1939, Tillie Boelman was united in marriage with Fred Johnson at St. Peters United Church of Christ, Wellsburg, Iowa. They made their home and farmed north of Parkersburg and later near Holland, Iowa. They also farmed near the Wellsburg community. In 1948 they bought a farm south of Aplington, which remains the family farm. Tillie was a member of the First Reformed Church in Aplington, where she was active in the Women’s Guild. She loved cooking and helping out on the farm. In her spare time she enjoyed gardening and canning.

On Monday, February 9, 2004, Tillie died at the Presbyterian Village in Ackley, Iowa. She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred; her parents; two brothers, George and Folkert Boelman; and one sister, Helen Graham.

Tillie is survived by three sons, Darrell (Merna) Johnson, Dennis (Joan)Johnson and Kenneth (Dwanna); nine grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Ben (Marg) Boelman, Jr., Robert (Hyla) Boelman; three sisters, Leona (Bill) Vigars; Lois (Darwyn) Lumley; and Pearl (Rev. Al) Kinrade.

Funeral Services were held at 1:30 p.m., Friday, February 13, 2004 at the First Reformed Church, Aplington, Iowa with Rev. Harlan DeJong officiating. Organist was Lois Wessels. Vocalists Willie Aalderks and Randy Aalderks sang “Through It All” and “In The Garden.” Congregational Hymns were “What A Friend We Have In Jesus” and “How Great Thou Art.” Casketbearers were Tim Johnson, Andy Johnson, Eric Johnson, Mike McCabe, Mark Sulentic, Gary Jarnagin, Darwin Van Horn, Mike Reyerson and Dan Goodman. Interment was in Pleasant View Cemetery, Aplington, Iowa. Redman-Schwartz Funeral Chapel, Aplington, was in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be directed to the family.
