Conrad Marine, Lt. John Slater, Killed Sunday In Vietnam

A Conrad area Marine, Lt. John E. Slater, was killed Sunday in Quang Nam province, South Viet Nam, during emergency evacuation of a reconnaissance patrol under fire.

Word of Lt. Slater's death was received today by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ervin Slater of RFD 1, Marshalltown.

According to the death notice Lt. Slater died of injuries received in a fall of 150 feet from the evacuation helicopter, or of gunshot wounds which may have caused him to fall from the sling while being hoisted to the aircraft.

The Slaters informed The Grundy Register that funeral services for their son are pending at Johnston's Funeral Home at Conrad.

Lt. Slater's body is expected to be returned to the United States in 10 to 12 days.

Lt. J. Slater Rites Held Tuesday

Services for Marine Lt. John Slater, 22, who died Dec. 15th in Vietnam were held this last week Tuesday at the First Congregational Church in Marshalltown. Burial was in the Grundy Center cemetery.

Lt. Slater was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Irvin Slater, formerly of the Conrad area.

Casket bearers were officers from the U. S. Marine Corps who accompanied the body.
