Grundy Center Man Killed In Highway Crash

A 21-year-old Grundy Center man was killed and two companions were injured in a car-truck crash at 6:55 a.m. Tuesday on Highway 14 about two miles north of Marshalltown.

Dead is Roger Ray VanDeest, of 507 1/2 G Avenue, who died enroute to a Marshalltown hospital of head injuries received in the mishap. He is the son of Mrs. Ella VanDeest, Grundy Center.

Injured were Daryl Meyer, 19, son of Mr. and Mrs. James Meyer of Holland, and Gary Ennenga, 22, son of Mrs. Willard Ennenga of Grundy Center.

Meyer was treated at a Marshalltown hospital, then transferred to University Hospitals in Iowa City. He suffered two broken ankles, a fractured upper jaw, broken collar bone and lacerations.

Ennenga is in Evangelical Hospital, Marshalltown, with a broken right leg, fractured left wrist, lacerations and bruises.

VanDeest and Ennenga were passengers in a 1961 Chevrolet, driven by Meyer, which was traveling south on Highway 14 for Marshalltown where they are employed by Fischer Governor Company.

Two miles north of Marshalltown the car collided with a 1968 GMC semi-trailer truck driven by Herman Fischer, 48, of Des Moines.

Fischer told Grundy County Sheriff Dick Kern the car drifted across the centerline and struck the left rear tandem wheels, upsetting the truck and demolishing the auto.

Sheriff Kern said there was no ice on the highway in the vicinity of the accident scene, and that visibility was clear. He said cause of the mishap was being investigated.

VanDeest is Grundy county's first traffic fatality of 1969.

Funeral services for Roger VanDeest will be held at the Bethany Presbyterian church Friday afternoon at 1:30. The body will be taken from the Engelkes-Abels Funeral Home at noon Friday. Rev. Gene Straatmeyer will officiate at the service. Burial will be in Rosehill cemetery at Grundy Center.

Roger Ray VanDeest was born April 1, 1947 in Marshalltown, the son of Raymond and Ella Tack VanDeest. He graduated from the Grundy Center high school in 1965. From November 13, 1966 to May 13, 1967 he served in the army, and has been in the army reserve since then.

Roger and Connie Miller were married June 23, 1967 at the Reformed church in Aplington. They have resided in Grundy Center since their marriage. Roger was employed by Fisher Governor in Marshalltown.

He is survived by his widow Connie and his mother, Mrs. Ella VanDeest. He was preceded in death by his father July 3, 1954.
