Hardin County Man Who had Lived His Full "Three Score and Ten" Years
Eli M. Hickman was born in Hamilton County, Indiana, April 18, 1843, and passed away at his home near Whitten, August 15, 1914, aged 71 years, 3 months and 27 days. When a child he moved with his parents to Henry County, Iowa, and later to Hardin county.
September 5, 1862, he enlisted in Company B, Eleventh Regiment, and was honorably discharged June 2, 1865. December 8, 1867, he was united in marriage to Maria Harris and to this union seven children were born, all of whom are living and were at the bedside of the father when death came. Mr. Hickman is survived by his faithful wife, two daughters, Mrs. Isaac Barron, of Mayward, Minn., Miss Maggie Hickman, at home; five sons, Fred, of Elma, Loten, of Mt. Etna, Theodore, of Ackley, Sherman, of Fairmont, Minn., and Glen, who resides on the home place. One brother, Henry Hickman, of Union, one sister, Mrs. Lovina Marsh, of Mt. Etna, seventeen grandchildren and a host of friends. Mr. Hickman was a faithful member of the Church of Christ. He bore his suffering with great patience, and expressed a desire to be at rest.
The funeral services were held at the home Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock, conducted by Rev. E. D. Curless. The pallbearers were J. B. Meyers, G. C. Day, E. A. Gregory, Jacob Clouse, Isaac Harris. Interment was in the Benson cemetery.
