Obituary--Eli Griggs

Eli Gregg passed away at his home in this city Wednesday morning, May 24, 1916, after an illness of several months. Mr. Griggs has been a resident of the Grove for some 21 years, and is respected by a large circle of friends. He leaves a widow and three daughters residing in Pacific Grove.

Eli Griggs was born in Monroeton, Pa., April 28, 1831. He was married to Miss Emma Wilson of Monroeton in 1852. To this union was born eleven children--six of whom are living, they are Mrs. T. T. Elliott and Mrs. S. L. Fritz of Pacific Grove, Mrs. S. B. Druck of San Jose; E. W. Griggs of Emmettsburg, Iowa, and Mrs. H. N. Mullen and H. M. Griggs of Medford, Mass. Mr. Griggs moved to Illinois from Pennsylvania; there his wife died, and he later moved to Grundy Center, Iowa. Mr. Griggs was again married in 1880 to Miss Esther Myer of Monroeton, Pa. Two children were born to this union; one died in infancy and the other, Miss Lula Griggs, of this city, survives him. He also leaves thirteen grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Mr. Griggs was a veteran of the civil war; he enlisted in the 15th Illinois Volunteer Infantry and held membership in the Lucius Fairchild Post of the G.A.R. of this city. Mr. Griggs has been a member of the Methodist church since he was eighteen years of age. He has been an official in various Methodist churches for sixty-seven years. He was a trustee of the local church at the time of his death. He was a student of the bible and a devoted and earnest Christian man.

The funeral service was held in the M.E. church Friday at 2 p.m. Rev. F. K. Baker officiating. Dr. L. M. Burwell, of Alameda, the former pastor of the local church, was present and assisted at the service.

The casket was not opened at the church but the body lay in state at the parlors of J. K. Paul and was viewed by friends during the forenoon.--Pacific Grove, Calif., Paper.
