Irene Irma Frey, age 81, formerly of Aplington, Iowa, was born the daughter of Martin B. and Anna (Hook) Meinders on September 28, 1929, Pleasant Valley Township, in rural Grundy County, Iowa. She received her education at the Pleasant Valley #4 County School near her home and then Aplington High School. After graduation Irene worked as a Nurse’s Aid in Hampton, Iowa, prior to marriage.

On November 10, 1955, Irene Meinders was united in marriage with Siebe H. Frey at St. Peter’s United Church of Christ, rural Wellsburg, Iowa. They made their home and farmed with Siebe’s Dad northwest of New Hartford. Irene was a loving mother and hard working farm wife.

In 1957 they moved and farmed south of Holland, Iowa and in 1961 they moved and farmed near Parkersburg, where Siebe farmed with his brother, Herman. A couple of years later they moved to a farm near Aplington and farmed with her brother, Ben Meinders. They returned to the Holland area and moved to an acreage. Irene was a former member of the First Baptist Church in Grundy Center, Iowa. In 1953 she had become a born again Christian.

In 2001 they moved to their home in Aplington. After Siebe’s passing away in 2008, Irene moved to live with her daughter, DiAnn and her family in Florida from September 2009 – September 2010, for a year. She then moved back to Iowa and became a resident at the Grundy County Memorial Hospital Long Term Care in Grundy Center, Iowa.

Irene died Saturday, April 9, 2011, at the Grundy County Memorial Hospital in Grundy Center, Iowa, from natural causes. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Siebe on April 18, 2008; and a sister, Esther Meinders.

Irene is survived by one daughter, DiAnn (Jim) Nobles of Orange Park, Florida; two grandchildren, Nathan and Daniel Nobles; and one brother, Ben Meinders of Aplington, Iowa.

Funeral Services will be 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, at the St. Peter’s United Church of Christ with burial at St. Peter’s United Church of Christ Cemetery both in rural Wellsburg, Iowa.

Visitation will be from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, at the Redman-Schwartz Chapel in Aplington, and one hour before services at the church.
