Elizabeth Douglas Schildroth, of Grundy Center, passed away on Wednesday, January 6, 2016 at the Grundy County Memorial Hospital, Grundy Center, Iowa. She was born May 14, 1926 in Orange County, North Carolina, daughter of James and Bertha Douglas Clegg. She attended schools in Hillsborough, North Carolina and graduated in 1942.

Following high school she attended Duke University in Durham, North Carolina and received her nursing diploma. After working as a registered nurse for a few years in North Carolina, she moved to Chicago in 1951 and worked as a staff nurse in the University of Chicago clinics. When she heard of an opening as the Grundy County Public Health Nurse, she headed west to pursue this new opportunity. Arriving in Iowa for the first time in the month of June 1953, she thought it was the most beautiful place she'd ever seen.

It was during her time as Grundy County Nurse that Elizabeth met her husband, Ronald, and after an eight month courtship, they were married on November 4, 1954 at Ivester Church of the Brethren. They had four children, Sarah, Robert, Joan and Nancy.

Elizabeth was greatly involved with Ronald as they farmed in Grundy County until 2003. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Grundy Center and served in various roles there including teaching Sunday School and serving in the kitchen. She was a skillful seamstress, making many of her children's clothes. She loved gardening, canning and freezing food for her family. Elizabeth and Ronald enjoyed travelling, both with their children, and then on their own later in life. They spent their last 11 winters together in Florida at Maranatha Village in Sebring.

Elizabeth is survived by three daughters, Sarah (Robert) Lehman of Grand Rapids, Michigan, Joan (Stephen) Blair of Silver Spring, Maryland, and Nancy (Mark) Buskohl of Grundy Center, Iowa; a son, Robert (Vicki) of Pella, Iowa; 10 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, James and Bertha, her half-sister, Lila, her daughter-in-law, Joy, and her husband, Ronald.

Memorials may be directed to Baptist Children's Home in Valparaiso, Indiana.
