Rites Held For Gertie Bergman

Mrs. Gertie Bergman, 84, of Grundy Center, passed away on Sunday, August 6, at the Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo.

Funeral services were held at the Bethany Presbyterian Church in Grundy Center on Tuesday, August 8. The Rev. Calvin Vanderwerf officiated.

Craig DeBerg sang "In Times Like These" and "Precious Lord, Take My Hand." The accompanist was Mrs. Dorothea Appel, who also played selected numbers for the prelude and postlude.

Grandsons serving as casket bearers were Gary Bergman, Kevin Bergman, Randall Bergman, Randy Clark, Steve Flamm and Guy Russo.

Ushers were Edward Flater and Eugene Meester. Mrs. Art Henze and Mrs. Bob Abels were in charge of the floral arrangements.

Interment was in the Rose Hill Cemetery, Grundy Center.

Mrs. Gertie Bergman was born August 5, 1905, on the Knock Family Farm near Holland in Grundy county. She was the daughter of Enno E. and Anna VanDeest Knock. She grew up on the family farm in Colfax township and attended country school.

On February 18, 1929, Gertie was united in marriage to George Bergman by Rev. K. J. Straatmeier at the Bethany Church Parsonage in Grundy Center. After their marriage, they farmed near Grundy Center for one year, near Dike for two years, and near New Hartford for 13 years. For 24 years, they farmed east of Stout, retiring and moving to Grundy Center in February of 1967.

Gertie was a longtime member of the Reformed Church of Stout, and after moving to Grundy Center, she joined the Bethany Presbyterian Church in 1968.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, George in 1978, and two sisters.

Gertie is survived by two sons, Donald Bergman, Monticello, and Roger Bergman, rural Parkersburg; three sisters, Mrs. Effie Klosterboer of Grundy Center, Mrs. Lydia Hyde of Waterloo, and Mrs. George (Lena) Eichel, of San Jose, CA; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

A memorial fund has been established.

The Engelkes-Abels Funeral Home in Grundy Center was in charge of the funeral arrangements.
