Joe F. Hummel Died Last Friday After A Short Illness
Joe F. Hummel died at his home in Grundy Center last Friday night after being confined to his bed for a week. Leakage of the heart was the cause. He had been employed in a drugstore at Fairbanks for some time. He came home a week ago Sunday and was sick at the time and went to bed and was never able to get up.
Funeral services were held at the Sacred Heart Catholic church in Grundy Center Wednesday morning with the local pastor, Rev. Schmeetz, officiating. Burial was in the Catholic cemetery at Grundy Center.
Mr. Hummel was 59 years old on the 31st of last March. He was born in Cedar Falls, two weeks after his folks came to this country from Germany. A little later the family moved to Steamboat Rock and then to Grundy county. They lived in the vicinity of Morrison. Following the death of his parents he came to Grundy Center to make his home with the Alois Hummel family. He attended a school of pharmacy in Chicago and later becoming a registered pharmacist he entered the Hummel drugstore in Grundy Center. A few years later he was given a partnership in the firm, and remained in this partnership until the business was sold some eighteen years ago. A number of years later he went into the grocery business here, which after a few years the Hummels disposed of.
Mr. Hummel was married in Grundy Center 33 years ago. The wife and three children survive. The children are Mrs. Lee Wical, Thaddeus and Sidney. There are six grandchildren. One brother, Dr. Andrew Hummel from Dyersville, and one sister, Mrs. A. Hummel from Grundy, are still living.
