The Passing Of One Of County's Oldest Settlers
John P. Arends, one of Grundy county's oldest settlers passed away at the home of his son Peter on the 22nd of June after reaching an age of 89 years, 11 months and 5 days, after an illness that extended over a period of five years.
Mr. Arends was born July 13, 1842, at Tichelwarf, Weener, Ostfriesland. In the year 1845 he came with his parents to the United States, residing for two years at Freeport, Ill., after which time they came to Iowa and settled on a farm near Aplington where they lived for one year. Later they bought a farm near Fern.
He was united in marriage on the 18th of March, 1873 with Malike Goldhorn. This union was blessed with 7 children, 5 of whom survive. Three sons, John, Ben, Hilke, two daughters, Mrs. (Dora) I. DeVries and Trena.
On September 2, 1884, he was called upon by the angel of death to part with his wife. He was united in marriage for a second time. This was on the 22nd of October, 1885, when he was married to Aaltje Peters. To this union were born six children. Of these five 4 sons, Peter Arend, Joe and Dick survive and one daughter, Reka, now Mrs. Claus Haren.
Funeral services were held Saturday, June 25th, at the Rev. Siemsen church preceded by a brief service at the home. Services were conducted by Rev. Siemsen and Rev. W. J. Heyenga. The pallbearers were the six grandchildren, Grant, Joe, Marlyn, Edward Arends, Melvin Haren and John DeVries. Interment was made in the cemetery adjoining the church which the deceased had served as elder for 30 years.
Relatives attended the funeral were Arend Arends and two sons, Mr. and Mrs. G. Clover, Mr. and Mrs. W. Clover, Blairsburg, Iowa, Mr. and Mrs. John Andreessen, Florida, Mr. and Mrs. John Hoffman and daughter Barbara of Cedar Falls, Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Andreessen of Grundy Center, Mr. and Mrs. Martin Meinders of Aplington, Mr. and Mrs. Jack Arends of Aplington and Mr. and Mrs. Sam Meyers of Iowa Falls.
