Oldest Resident Of Colfax Twp. Died Thursday
Fred Getting, Sr., oldest resident of Colfax township and one of the pioneers of Grundy county, died at the home of his son, Fred Jr., three miles west of Holland last Thursday. He was 92 years old on the 15th of last January.
Old age accounted for his death. Two years ago he was seriously ill for several months and there was little hope at the time that he would recover. He regained much of his former vitality after that severe illness and was able to get about until a rapid decline set in during the beginning of the winter.
Mr. Getting was the oldest resident of Colfax township. He came here more than 60 years ago and during all of that time made his home on a farm. He was born in Germany and came to this country before he arrived at his maturity. For a number of years he resided at Freeport, Ill., before he came to make his future home in Grundy county.
Mrs. Getting died 22 years ago. Surviving are three sons and four daughters. The sons are Will, Helmut and Fred. The daughters are Mrs. Harm Lutterman, Mrs. Jurgen Lutterman, Mrs. George Hook, all of Grundy county, and Mrs. Will Johnson from Worthington, Minn. Two sons, Lou and George, are dead.
Funeral services were held at the home Monday afternoon and later at the Lutheran church in Holland. The local pastor, Rev. Athenstadt, had charge of the services, assisted by Dr. J. E. Drake, pastor of the Holland Presbyterian church.
Burial was by the side of the wife in the Holland cemetery.
