At the age of about twenty years he came with his parents to America. They came to Parkersburg and the departed spent his entire life in that community. For many years he resided with his family on a farm five miles southeast of Aplington, until several years ago, when they retired from the farm and moved to Aplington. On the 24th day of May, 1901, he was united in marriage to Miss Rachel Emkes. To this union five children, one son and four daughters, were born. In his youth he was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith in Viene, Germany. He was interested in the church being a regular attendant at public worship and a loyal supporter.

A little more than a year ago he began to suffer from a throat disease which grew gradually worse until he suddenly and unexpectedly passed away last Friday, December 18, 1931, at his home in Aplington. He reached the age of 70 years, 5 months and 4 days. Brief funeral services were held at the home Monday noon after which they were continued in the Lutheran church four miles northeast of Wellsburg.
