Mrs. M. Carpenter Dies July 1st
Mrs. May Carpenter died last Thursday, July 1, at Maple Lodge, Grundy Center, after an illness of about a year and a half. During the latter part of October, 1952, she suffered a severe stroke from which she never fully recovered. She was a patient in the Grundy hospital from the time she was stricken until a few weeks ago when she was taken to Maple Hill Lodge. She was 76 years old last January.
Mrs. Carpenter's maiden name was May Erwin. She was born at Pecatonia, Ill., January 19, 1878. She grew up there.
On July 27, 1904, May Erwin and Dr. L. H. Carpenter were married at Pecatonica by Rev. Charles F. Carpenter. Immediately following their marriage the couple came to Grundy Center where Dr. Carpenter began the practice of his profession, a work in which he continued until his death 27 years ago.
In early childhood Mrs. Carpenter joined the Methodist church, and was a continuous member as long as her health permitted. She was also affiliated with civic and social groups in Grundy Center.
Mrs. Carpenter was the mother of four children, Mrs. Phyllis I. Rose of Grundy Center, Erwin L. Carpenter of Stamford, Conn., Mrs. Helen Newberg of Des Moines and Laura Annette, who died in childhood. She is also survived by two sisters, Mrs. Elizabeth Goodwill and Miss Carrie Erwin, Pecatonica, Ill., one brother, Otto, from Rockford, Ill., Dr Carpenter's sister, Mrs. Maud Sheller of Cedar Falls, and five grandchildren.
Funeral services were at the Methodist church in Grundy Center Saturday afternoon. The service was conducted by Rev. LeRoy Baumann. Burial was in the Grundy Center cemetery.
