Aged Eldora Man Dead

George Nelson, Pioneer of Hardin and Grundy Counties, Passes Away

Eldora, June 16--George J. Nelson, aged 75 years, died at his home here this morning after an illness of several weeks due to a complication of diseases. Mr. Nelson was a native of Richland, N.Y., where he was born Dec. 13, 1839. He came to Iowa in 1866 settling first in Grundy county. During the war he served as a member of the Seventh New York cavalry. He was married to Miss Florence Haskin in 1868. The wife and four children survive.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday from the residence, with burial on Thursday in the Benson cemetery at Whitten.

He Came to Grundy County 47 Years Ago

George J. Nelson died at his home in Eldora Monday following a brief illness. Services were held at the house yesterday and interment will be made today in the cemetery at Whitten.

Mr. Nelson was 75 years old. He was one of the early settlers of Grundy county. He came here in 1867 and located on a farm in Felix township. He resided there until about ten years ago when he retired from farm work and moved to Eldora.

Immediate relatives consist of a wife, three sons and one daughter. One son, Ed Nelson is a resident of this county.

Old Soldier Mustered Out

The second death among the old soldiers of this vicinity within thirty days was that of George J. Nelson, formerly member of Company B, 7th N.Y. Volunteer Cavalry, and a member of E. C. Buckner Post No. 154, Iowa Dept. G.A.R., which occurred at his late residence in Eldora, Tuesday morning at 2:00 o'clock.

Veteran Nelson was born in Richland, N.Y., Dec. 13, 1839. He came to Iowa in 1866. In 1868 he was married to Miss Florence Haskins. They had five children, of whom one died in early youth and four are still living. Those living are Edwin, Harry C. and Mrs. J. H. Whitwood, all of whom live near Eldora, and Victor D., of Mason City, all of whom were present for the funeral services.

The funeral services were held at the home, Wednesday afternoon at 2:30, Rev. Dr. H. White and Rev. W. E. Stanley officiating. The burial will be in the Benson cemetery near Whitten on Thursday. The services were attended by Buckner Post and the W.R.C.
