Wendell T. Byrnes, 88, of Grundy Center, died on Saturday, June 17, 2006 at his Grundy Co. Memorial Hospital.

Wendell T. Byrnes was born on August 27, 1917 near Grundy Center, IA, son of Wilbur E. and Anna M. (Harris) Byrnes. He grew up and worked on the family farm near Grundy Center. He attended school in Morrison, Reinbeck and country school. After graduating high school, Wendell did various local farm work and worked at John Deere. On August 22, 1941, Wendell was united in marriage to Clara Mae Hillygus in Lancaster, MO. Very soon after the wedding, Wendell was drafted into the U.S. Army. He served with distinction during WWII in many theaters including North Africa, European and Italy. While part of the 105th Infantry, Wendell was awarded 2 Purple Hearts and the Silver Star. After returning home following the war, Wendell and Clara made their home near Conrad, IA. They then moved to Grundy Center. Wendell worked very hard, doing many different occupations, but always enjoyed and was proud to be a lineman for the local utilities. Wendell retired in 1980. Clara died on August 22, 1997. Wendell was united in marriage to Maris Heltibridle on January 8, 2000 in Grundy Center.

Wendell was a member of the United Methodist Church, where he served as a Trustee and usher for many years. He was also a member of the American Legion Post 349 of Grundy Center. Wendell loved striking up controversial conversations at the Manly?s Coffee Club. He enjoyed working hard, especially on family projects.

Surviving relatives include his wife, Maris Byrnes of Grundy Center; one son, Tom (Julie) Byrnes of Morrison, IA; 2 step-daughters, Kathleen (James) Boston of San Marcos, TX, Beth (Ric) Moller of Conrad; 2 brothers, Edwin Byrnes of Lakota, ND, Lawrence ?Bill? Byrnes of Waterloo; one sister, Faye Benway of Littleton, CO; 2 grandchildren, 4 step-grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren, 3 step-great-grandchildren.

Wendell was preceded in death by his first wife, Clara; 2 brothers, Harris and Pete Byrnes; 2 sisters, Florence Viken and Dorothy Groenwald.
