Three Die From Meningitis

Dreaded Disease Takes Heavy Toll in Beaver Township

Three children of Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Arends of Beaver township have died during the past six weeks of spinal meningitis. The first victim of this terrible disease was the oldest child in the family, Martin, eleven years old. He was taken to the hospital at Cedar Falls as soon as he became sick and died there three days later. Two weeks later, his brother, George, became a victim and he died at the hospital three days later. Last Thursday the baby boy, Robert Vernon, eight months old, was visited with the same affliction that proved fatal to his brothers and he died at the home last Sunday and was buried at a private funeral service by the side of the other two children. There are three children left in this family, two boys and one girl, all of whom are under ten years old.

Dora Behrends, the eight-year-old daughter of Abel Behrends, who had been making her home with the Arends family, was stricken with spinal meningitis two weeks ago. She was taken to the hospital at Cedar Falls and is recovering and the attending physician believes that she will become entirely cured. The little girl has been troubled with tuberculosis and if the treatment she has received at the hospital will not entirely relieve her of this trouble, she will be sent to a sanitarium until she is fully cured.
