In August, 1908, he enlisted in the regular United States army, serving until July, 1914, a period of six years, of which four years were spent in the Philippine Islands; the other two years were spent in the States. During the last seven years of his life he was cared for by the United States government in various sanitariums.

He leaves a father, one sister and three brothers to mourn his loss. His mother preceded him to the spirit world. The mother having been of the Presbyterian faith, Jesse was christened when a child.
