Dies After 6 Months' Illness
End Comes for Mrs. J. H. McCullough Who Suffered from Cancer
Mrs. J. H. McCullough died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. R. S. Taft, in Grundy Center last Saturday evening at eight o'clock following an illness of about a year from cancer. She was confined to her bed continually for several months.
Mrs. McCullough whose maiden name was Katherine Schroeder, came to Grundy county fifty-nine years ago. She was born in Schleswig, Holstein, Germany, April 12th, 1862. She would have been sixty-five years old on her next birthday. Mrs. McCullough came to this country with her parents when she was six years old. They first located at Wheatland, Iowa, after which they came to Grundy county. She was married in December, 1886, to J. H. McCullough. The ceremony took place in Grundy Center. Shortly after their marriage Mr. and Mrs. McCullough moved to Clinton where their two children were born. From Clinton they removed to Britt, Iowa, and from there to North Dakota where they took a homestead. In 1905 the family returned to Grundy Center where they made their home continually.
Mrs. McCullough is survived by her husband and two children. The children are Roy McCullough, from Detroit, and Mrs. R. S. Taft of this city. There are four surviving sisters and three surviving brothers: Mrs. Mary Willard, Dayton, Oregon; Mrs. Fred Davis, Adrian, Minn.; Mrs. R. L. Richardson, Granville, No. Dak.; Mrs. Margaret Sarcet, Minneapolis, Minn.; P. H. Schroeder, Chicago, Ill.; William, Mason City, Iowa; John, Britt, Iowa. The son, Roy, was able to join other relatives here at the funeral.
The following relatives and friends from a distance attended the funeral: Mr. and Mrs. Albert Meyer, Traer; Mrs. Dr. Meyer, Gladbrook; Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Hoover, Eldora; Miss Maria King, Mr. Nolta, State Center; Mrs. Lena Miller and daughters, Waterloo; Hugh Smiley, Reinbeck; Mr. and Mrs. Fred Davis, Adrian, Minn.; Wm. Schroeder, Mason City.
Funeral services conducted by Rev. F. C. Chambers, pastor of the Presbyterian church, were held at the home Thursday afternoon. She was buried in the Grundy Center cemetery.
