Obbo Mennenga Commits Suicide

Obbo Mennenga, who resided nearly all of his life on a farm in west Shiloh township, committed suicide early Tuesday morning by hanging himself in the basement at his home in Steamboat Rock. Baling twine was used by the suicide. Mr. Mennenga had been in a depressed and nervous state of mind for some time. He was very restless during the night and got up early in the morning. The wife went to sleep again after her husband got up. When she awakened and got up some time later she called to her husband and got no response. She called in a neighbor and the two went to the basement and found Mr. Mennenga dead and suspended from a basement rafter. The Hardin county coroner was called. He was satisfied death was due to suicide and that an inquest was not necessary.

Mr. Mennenga bought a house in Steamboat Rock last year. He and his wife moved into the house about six weeks ago. Their son remains on the farm.

Mr. Mennenga was born on a farm in Shiloh township and lived there continually until he moved to Steamboat Rock. He would have been 75 years old had he lived until the 9th of next month. He and his wife owned a farm in Shiloh and in Colfax townships. He is survived by his wife, one son Edward who lives on the home farm, one daughter Mrs. Albert Kruse of Steamboat Rock.

Mrs. Hilko Bleeker, who died Monday night, was Mr. Mennenga's sister. There will be a funeral service Thursday afternoon at the First Christian Reformed church west of Wellsburg for both Mrs. Bleeker and Mr. Mennenga. Burial will be in the cemetery adjoining the church. The services will be conducted by Rev. Joseph VandeKieft.
