Colfax Pioneer Dies Suddenly

Poppe G. Heronimus died very suddenly at his home in Colfax township at an early hour Friday morning. He appeared to be in his usual good health when he retired on Thursday evening. The following morning the family found him dead in bed. It is believed the end came at an early hour in the morning. Heart failure was the cause.

Funeral services were held at Drake's church on Monday afternoon and there was a very large attendance.

Mr. Heronimus would have been eighty-six years old on the 6th day of next July. He was born in Eastfriesland, Germany, and resided in the land of his birth until he was thirty years of age. At that time he came to this country and for three years resided in Ogle county, Illinois. From Illinois he came to Grundy county fifty-three years ago. He bought a farm in Colfax township, which has been his home continuously for fifth-three years.

Mr. Heronimus was married to Miss Habie Oltmans in Grundy county fifty-three years ago. The wife died thirty-five years ago. In late years Mr. Heronimus has been making his home with his son, Sam, who is living on the home place.

Mr. and Mrs. Heronimus were the parents of eight children. One died in infancy. A son, Paul, died three years ago. The surviving children are, George, from George, Iowa; Heye, Ben and Mrs. John Haren of this county, Mrs. Kate Wicks from Bigelow, Minn., and Sam, from Colfax township.

Relatives from a distance at the funeral were George Heronimus and wife from George; Mr. and Mrs. Byron Wicks, from Bigelow, Minn., and Mr. and Mrs. Harm Goeken and son, from Oregon, Ill.
