John M. H. "Jack" Black, 92 of Dike died Saturday November 20, 2004 at the Grundy Care Center in Grundy Center, Iowa of natural causes. Funeral Services will be on Wednesday, November 24, 2004 at 10:30 A.M. at the Dike United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in the Elmwood Cemetery in Dike. Visitation will be on Wednesday from 9:00 A.M. until service time, at the Church. A memorial fund has been established.
John was born February 15, 1912 in Reinbeck, Iowa the son of Alexander and Sarah Black. He attended and graduated from Reinbeck High School in 1929. On June 20, 1944 he was united in marriage to Sibyl M. Miller at the home of her parents. Four children were born of this union. Jack spent his entire life farming, owning his farm and as a hired man. He worked for Ubben Building Supplies in Dike until his retirement. He enjoyed his garden and apple orchard, supplying many relatives and friends with produce. He was an avid hunter of deer and pheasant until his health no longer permitted the recreation. Jack was always known for using Black Jack gum as his calling card.
Survivors include 2 sons: Hugh A. "Sandy" Black and his wife Lynn of Grand Prairie, Texas, and John C. Black and his wife Karen of Peoria, Arizona; 1 daughter: Sarah "Sally" K. Moore and her husband Tom of Rushford, Minnesota; 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; 1 brother-in-law: John Miller of Glendale, California, and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife Sibyl in 2002, 1 son: George Black; 1 brother: Henry M. "Jim" Black; 5 sisters: Beulah "Bootsie" Black, Avis (Mrs. Alfred Hardt) Jean (Mrs. Hank Knepal) Charlotte (Mrs. Bert Mitchell) and Ethel in infancy.
