Irene R. Schmidt, 84, of Grundy Center, passed away on Tuesday May 10th, 2011 at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo. Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, May 13, 2011 at the Colfax Center Presbyterian Church in Holland Iowa. Burial will follow at the Colfax Center Presbyterian Church Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on Friday, May 13, 2011 at the Colfax Center Presbyterian Church. Memorials may be directed to the church.

Irene was born on November 6, 1926 in rural Grundy County. She was the daughter of Renko and Henrietta Schmidt. Irene attended the Colfax #8 School. As a young woman she assisted on the family farm and as a young adult she became the primary care giver to her mother. Irene began a career as a nurse's aide and worked in the Grundy County Memorial Hospital for many years.

Irene was a lifelong member of the Colfax Center Presbyterian Church. She enjoyed attending coffee fellowship at Manly Drugs, with her friends and neighbors. She will be missed and long remembered by her friends and family.

Irene is survived by her sisters Margaret VanDeest of Grundy Center, IA and Esther (Chris) Freese of Dike, IA; brother Carl (Leola) Schmidt of Grundy Center, IA; many nieces and nephews and many cherished friends.

She is preceded in death by her sisters Martha Schmidt, Anna (Hank) Werkman and Lucy (Hank) Abels; brother Renko (Gertie) Schmidt Jr.; brother-in-law Herbert VanDeest and a sister in infancy.
