Mary Schoneman, 101, of Holland, Iowa, passed away of natural causes, on Tuesday, December 13, 2011 at the Grundy County Memorial Hospital Long Term Care in Grundy Center, Iowa while under the care of Cedar Valley Hospice. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, December 17, 2011 at 10:30 am at the Pleasant Valley Reformed Church, just west of Fern, IA. Burial will follow at Holland cemetery. A visitation will be held on Friday, December 16, 2011 from 4 to 6 pm at Engelkes-Abels Funeral Home in Grundy Center, Iowa. A memorial has been established.

Mary Laverene was born March 17, 1910, in Holland, Iowa, the daughter of James Andrew and Louisa Cornelia (Dirks) Smith. She attended grade school in Holland then attended Grundy Center High School graduating with the class of 1929. After graduation she taught country school for thirteen years. In 1942 Mary became Postmaster at Holland, Iowa retiring in 1976. On June 30, 1949, Mary was united in marriage to Jacob Schoneman at Holland Christian Reformed Church. She was a member of the Pleasant Valley Reformed Church in Fern where she belonged to the ladies guild. She belonged to the Holland Community Club, many Postal organizations and was a life member of NARFE (National Association of Retired Federal Employees). Her loving care for family members will always be remembered. Mary loved spending time with her family and friends.

She is survived by her sister, Hazel Hook; nieces and nephews, Donald Hanson (Brenda), Russell Hanson, Marilyn Uhlenberg, David Hanson, Ann Hardel (David), Mardean Willis and Paul Hook (Cindy); many great nieces and nephews; great-great nieces and nephews and a great-great-great niece and nephew.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband Jake on June 7, 1994; sister, Viola Hanson and brother-in-law Ben Hook.
