John Dinnes, for 40 Years a Resident of Grundy County, Dies at Ripe Old Age

John Dinnes was born in Pomerania, Prussia, Germany, June 28, 1851, and departed this life November 24, 1925, aged 74 years, 4 months and 26 days.

At the age of 10 years he began the life of a sailor, which life he followed for ten years. During this time his ship cast anchor at many of the principal coast cities of the world. He came to the United States in 1871, spending two years in New Orleans and Chicago, coming to Melrose township, Grundy county, Iowa, in 1873, where he resided till his death, having lived on the farm for the last 40 years.

On Oct. 20, 1881, he was married to Mary Sheller, and to this union were born five children, two of whom preceded him in death, an infant son and a daughter, Emma. He is survived by his wife and three children, Orla, Ralph and May; also four grandchildren, all of whom reside in Melrose township.

In 1887 he sent for his foster parents, Mr. and Mrs. Fredrick Dinse, to come to this country to make their home with them, which they did as long as they lived.

Mr. Dinnes became a christian and united with the Church of the Brethren in September, 1887, and was a faithful and active member until his death.

The funeral service was held in the Ivester church on Friday afternoon, November 27. There was a large crowd present. Rev. I. D. Leatherman preached the funeral sermon using the text Luke 12:37.
