Chas. Garels Passes Away at Marshalltown

Chas. Garels was born in Ostfriesland, Germany, on Nov. 8, 1846. At the age of 17 he came to the United States. He first settled in Illinois and later came to Grundy county.

On Wednesday, Oct. 21, he met with an accident. He had gone to the barn in the afternoon of that day and when he did not return at the expected time Mrs. Roelf Pabst went out to look after him. She found him near the barn door and discovered that Mr. Garels had fallen and that his hip-bone was broken. He was taken to the Deaconess hospital at Marshalltown, where he passed away Sunday morning. Thus his age was 78 years, 11 months and 17 days.

He leaves to mourn his death four sisters: Mrs. Frank Bakker, Renville, Minn.; Mrs. Henry Meinders, Red Lodge, Mo.; Mrs. John Cea, Grundy Center; and Mrs. John Marriett, Kansas City, Mo., besides many other relatives and friends.

Mr. Garels stayed for the last twelve years with Mr. and Mrs. Roelf Pabst, whose uncle he was. Mr. Garels was a brother of the late Mrs. Roelf Pabst, who preceded him in death about 10 months ago. Mr. and Mrs. Pabst have shown much kindness and affection to Mr. Garels, and cared for him tenderly in his declining years. "Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of them my brethren, ye have done it unto me."

Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the Lincoln Center church. Rev. M. Weeldreyer conducting the services.
