Old Colfax Resident Is Dead

Henry Meester Passed Away At His Home Last Friday

Henry Meester died at his home in Colfax township last Friday night at 10:45. He had been sick for a number of months but was confined to his bed for but one day before the end came. It was believed that he was afflicted with cancer.

Funeral services conducted by Rev. Siemsen were held at the Siemsen church yesterday afternoon and they were very largely attended.

Mr. Meester came to Grundy county fifty-six years ago and resided here continually during all of that time. When he came here he bought an 80-acre piece of land in north Colfax township and he has made his home on this place during the fifty-six years that he lived in Grundy county. He paid $7.00 an acre for this farm when it was bought. He later bought several additional pieces of Grundy county land and distributed this land among his children after they all arrived at their majority.

Mr. Meester was 87 years old the 22nd of last January. He was born in Germany and resided there until the year 1865, when he came to this country. He was at Freeport, Ill., during the first four years after he came to this country and he was married there. Shortly after his marriage he and his wife came to this county. They drove here with a team like real pioneers and they brought all of their possessions with them.

Mr. and Mrs. Meester raised a family of ten children, nine of whom are living. The children are Mrs. Ben Engelkes, Jacob T. Meester, Joe A. Meester, Mrs. George Kruger, Mrs. Joe J. Meester, Tom Meester, John Meester, Mrs. Heit Peters, Mrs. Eilert Pruis and Henry H. Meester. All of the children reside in Grundy county. Aside from the children Mr. Meester is survived by his wife and his two brothers, Daniel and Jacob.
