Elmer Jurgen Eiklenborg, 89, of Dike, passed away at the Grundy County Memorial Hospital Long Term Care on Thursday, June 6, 2013. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Monday, June 10, 2013 at the Reformed Church of Stout. Burial will follow at the Stout Cemetery with military honors conducted by the Dike American Legion Post #471. A visitation will be held from 4:00 P.M. until 7:00 P.M. on Sunday, June 9, 2013 at the Engelkes-Abels Funeral Home, Dike Chapel, 680 Main Street in Dike. Memorials may be directed to the family.

Elmer was born on December 12, 1923 west of Stout at the home of his parents, Fritz and Dena (Bruns) Eiklenborg. He attended country school at Beaver No. 6 thru the 8th grade. He served in the United States Army during World War II and was stationed in the Philippine Islands. Elmer was united in marriage to Gertie Kruger on March 15, 1946 at the parsonage of the Christian Reformed Church in Parkersburg, Iowa. They farmed in the Dike area from 1946 until 1966, when Elmer went to work at Clay Equipment in Cedar Falls until his retirement in 1989. In his retirement Elmer remained active working in the Dike and Stout area mowing lawns and removing snow.

Elmer was a member of the Dike American Legion Post #471 and the Reformed Church of Stout where he served as a Deacon, Elder, head usher and youth group leader. He enjoyed going on family fishing trips and going to the Barn Café with his grandsons. "There never was a stranger, just a friend not yet met."

Elmer is survived by his wife Gertie; son Dennis Eiklenborg of Buffalo, MN; daughters Cheryl (Allen) Smeins and Delores Eiklenborg both of Dike, Iowa; 5 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother Frank; sister-in-law Hazel; 2 sisters and 2 brothers in infancy.
