Gwendolyn Eloise Cox, 93, of Grundy Center, Iowa, passed away on Saturday, December 21, 2013 at the Grundy County Memorial Hospital, Long Term Care, while under the care of Iowa Hospice. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Friday, December 27, 2013 at St. Gabriel Catholic Church in rural Reinbeck. Burial will be held privately at Rose Hill Cemetery in Grundy Center. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the funeral mass at the church. Memorials may be directed to the family.
Gwen was born in Marshalltown, Iowa on August 24, 1920, the daughter of Charles I. and Alice E. (Weaver) Peterson. She graduated from Grundy Center High School with the class of 1939. Gwen was united in marriage to James Edward Cox on June 22, 1939. Together they made their home in Grundy Center and welcomed two children into their family.
Gwen was a member of St. Gabriel Catholic Church and a former member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Grundy Center, where she served the church in a variety of ways. Gwen loved to dance with her husband Jim. They enjoyed going to dances together for many years. They were a very social couple and enjoyed spending time with friends in their community. Gwen was an avid bowler and she loved to play cards, knit and crochet. She belonged to the Legion Auxiliary and volunteered at the hospital as well as the Senior Center. However, her true joy in life came from spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
Gwen is survived by her children, Judy (Lloyd) Allen, of Altoona, Iowa and Joe (Charlotte) Cox of Duluth, Georgia; 7 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great-grandchildren and brother John (Imogene) Peterson of Mesa, AZ.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Jim and sister Doris Stevens.
