Gordon V. Akers 75, of Grundy Center, Iowa, died Wednesday, April 2, 2014, at the Grundy County Memorial Hospital while under the care of Cedar Valley Hospice. Memorials may be directed to the family.
Gordon Vernon was born March 5, 1939, in Grundy Center, Iowa, son of Odra and Burnius (Hawn) Akers. He graduated from Grundy Center High School with the class of 1957 then served with the U.S. Air Force from 1957 to 1961.
On April 21, 1962 Gordon was united in marriage to Wanda Werkman at The United Methodist Church in Grundy Center, Iowa. After their marriage Gordon and Wanda lived in Kansas City for eight years while Gordon worked for Braniff Airlines. They then relocated back to Grundy Center where they owned the Grundy Home Bakery from 1970-1981. Gordon then took a job with the Alaskan pipeline as a cook from 1981-1983. He returned to Grundy Center and became the golf course superintendent at Town and Country Golf Club in Grundy Center until he retired in 2000 after 17 years.
He was a member of United Methodist Church, Town and Country Golf Club and the Grundy Center Fire Department. Gordon enjoyed, golf, cooking, gardening, visiting casinos and attending his grandchildren's sporting events and school activities, but his greatest joy came from spending time with his family especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife, Wanda; children, LuJean Muller and her husband Mike of Grundy Center, Robin Akers and friend Craig Halupnick of Waterloo; grandchildren, Jeffrey (Amy) Muller, Melissa Muller, Kayla Bartels, Zach Bartels; and great-grandchildren Kane Muller, Khloe Bartels, Weston Muller and Brooklynn Bartels.
Gordon was preceded in death by his parents and three sisters, Nancy Linsenmier, Janeen Wical and Pamela McKelvey.
